Introducing Spanish to my children is important because they need to know other languages. Spanish is at the top of the list because it is the second highest spoken language in the country. Later in middle or high school they can take a full courses, earlier if they are ready but for now a good introduction is all I am looking for.

While looking around at curriculum not much popped out at me and screamed buy me. It is hard for me to purchase something if we will not use it to its fullest. It is very unlikely that we will go in depth with Spanish at ages 6/4/3 so began the search of looking for something free that would introduce the language and keep their interest.

I came across the Georgia Public Broadcasting site. Their website that had a bunch of simple lessons. All free! It is called Salsa. We started watching them to test it out and see how the kids did with it. We found that the videos kept the kids attention really well and got them excited about learning Spanish. Perfect!

We now watch the videos three times a week. There is an activity sheet on the website that goes along with the video. We use that and go over the words to watch for each lesson or video. If words that are not on the activity sheet are being repeated enough then I make sure the kids know what the words mean. After the video time is spent going over all the new words and words from previous videos.

We are on the seventh video and so far the activities that go along with them have been fun and kept the kids engaged. Some of the activities are simple and some are more complex. The all time favorite is to play duck duck goose using the Spanish words from the video. This is a good repetition exercise for them to help remember the words. Another favorite was the episode that talked about teeth. We made clay teeth! This took us into a good discussion about dental hygiene.

We have been watching each episode multiple times and making up our own activities to go with them. Some days we just practice the words. I love how simple and easy this is and that it is free!
I did purchase some flash cards to go along with us practicing, check them out!
