One of my daughters absolutely loves owls, any kind of owl really and I can see why. They are fascinating creatures. I love to keep science lessons towards their interests but we are starting to run out of ideas that are fun and exciting. I saw this site that was selling owl pellets and thought that the kiddos would really enjoy that.

The pellets came really fast so we did not have to wait long! I ordered three small pellets and it was only about five dollars. I was extremely impressed with the pellets and will definitely order again when the kids are older. They can with a wonderful chart that shows you the different animals that owls eat. The chart had the bones pictured along with labels as to what they were and what animal they belonged to.

We read some stories and studied owls a bit before we did the dissection. Did you know that owls have a gizzard? That is where the pellets come from. It really is fascinating. Owls have two stomachs! One is the regular stomach, glandular, this is the one that makes the acids and also helps to distinguish parts of the prey that can be digested or cannot. The parts that cannot be digested, like bones and fur, go to the other stomach, the gizzard or ventriculus. The bones and fur get matted into the pellet and the owl will regurgitate (throw up) the pellet. How Cool!?

Check out the bones the kiddos found!
